1992: Famine
After learning about a famine in Somalia, Kenya’s neighbor to the north, Dan decides to hop a flight with an aid group and visit a refugee camp. What he sees there, in addition to conversations with experienced journalists, convinces him that a big story is about to break. On July 5, he visits Mogadishu, the capitol of Somalia, for the first time. The city has been nearly demolished by warring clans. Among other things, Dan photographs a teenager with a semiautomatic rifle who is lazily smoking a cigarette in the remains of the city’s cathedral. He sells the photo to a Nairobi newspaper and begins working for both them and the news agency Reuters as a stringer.
