Dan is preparing to leave Mogadishu for another visit to Nairobi. His bags are packed and his replacement, photographer Hos Maina, has arrived. He’s on the rooftop of the hotel, a popular spot for the journalists to congregate, when helicopters begin bombing a central point not far from the hotel. They all watch, wondering what’s going on. When the dust has settled, a group of Somalis come to the hotel and ask the journalists to come witness what has happened—a private home has been bombed and many people are dead or wounded. It’s a common request, and after the journalists are promised safety, they take off in several trucks. Dan, Hos, Mohammed Shaffi, Hansi Krauss, and Anthony Macharia are in front. When they reach the villa, they are taken aback by the amount of bloodshed. After documenting the scene for several minutes, the crowd suddenly turns on them. The men take off in different directions, running from the crowd. Only Mohammed Shaffi survives. The others are beaten and stoned to death.
